Candace Parker headlines the second week of transactions going down in the WNBA.
February 11,
Candace Parker - Los Angeles Sparks (Re-signed)
Being one of the cored free agents this season for the LA Sparks, retaining her star power was crucial. After missing the first half of last season due to rest, Parker re-joined the team leading in nearly every statistical category and posting 12 double-doubles in 16 games played. As a Sparks fan, I am estastic to see that Candace wants to stay with the Sparks in hopes of bringing a championship to Los Angeles.
Previous free agent signings this week:
February 8,
Penny Taylor - Phoenix Mecury (Re-signed)
Penny Taylor is the engine that makes the Phoenix Mercury go. The 3 time WNBA champion has been beneficial to their success, but has also dealt with a number of injuries plaguing her career. She sat out in 2012 with a torn ACL then sat out again in 2015 citing rest. Getting her back into action will certaintly put the Mercury back into the WNBA finals conversation where they hope to go for their 4th title.
Jeanette Pohlen - Indiana Fever (Re-signed)
As a consistent threat from beyond the arc (career 42.5%) Jeanette Pohlen helped lead the Indiana Fever to a championship in 2012. I find it interesting as to why she would only receive a training camp contract, but it does give the Fever a chance to weigh out their options. Ultimately, I think she will make the team.
Erica Wheeler - Indiana Fever
For the Fever it surely doesn't hurt to add another guard option into training camp. Erica Wheeler has found herself being bounced around the league in her first season playing for the Dream then Liberty late last season. Hopefully she can find a permenant spot with the Fever this year.
February 9,
Jessica Breland - Chicago Sky (Re-signed)
To get further in the playoffs, every team needs an 'X-Factor' to do the little things and that is what Jessica Breland brings to the Sky. Averaging 6.7 PPG and 5.9 RPG, she is the extra line of defense when needed and can be counted on offensively when the opponets focus is shifted towards Delle Donne.
Crystal Langhorne Seattle Storm (Re--signed)
I had inititally questioned why the Storm would need to core her, but with Abby Bishop and Ramu Tokashiki due to miss some time, it made sense for the Storm to want to keep her around. I think Langhorne will not only provide her scoring, but also her mentorship to a lot of the young players on the team, especially for one that is coming out of UConn.
Angel Goodrich - Seattle Storm (Re-signed)
Angel Goodrich may be small for her stature, but she plays wuth a lot of heart. Her numbers might not stand out on a stat sheet (career 2.8 PPG, 2.2 APG) but she did set a new career high in assists (3.0) and is hoping to improve in Seattle for 2016.
Aneika Henry - Connecticut Sun
This should be classified as another surprise signing for the fact that Aneika Henry was listed as restricted under the Dream. Apparently, her move to the Sun means Atlanta didn't care to match any offers for her. Henry has been a decent post off the bench averaging 5.2 PPG and 4.7 RPG. My only thing is I am puzzled as to why the Sun would need another post after trading away Elizabeth Williams? it doesn't make any sense to me, but she is a good pick-up for them nevertheless.
February 10,
Matee Ajavon - Atlanta Dream (Re-signed)
On our WNBA 365 show last week, I asked our panel of hosts who was more valuable between Matee Ajavon and Sydney Carter? well the Dream answered that question with the re-signing of Matee Ajavon. Of course this signing really has no bearing on whether Carter will return or not, but from how things are going it seems like the Dream can still see a role for Ajavon on the current roster.
Avery Warley-Talbert - New York Liberty (Re-signed)
Stat-wise she didn't do much of anything last year, but she does bring size and her defensive presence in the paint is what Bill see's when she is on the floor. The Libs are all about defense and she will look to impose her will in NY this summer.
February 11,
Clarissa Dos Santos - Chicago Sky (Re-signed)
Clarissa Dos Santos has reaally made an impact for the Sky in her first season averaging 5.3 PPG and 4.6 RPG. Like her teammate Erika de Souza, Dos Santos a Brazilian herself will miss the first half of the season due to the olympics in Rio.
February 12,
Ramu Tokashiki - Seattle Storm (Re-signed)
Tokashiki is the kind of player that made you look even when she didn't command attention. Ramu had a great rookie year averaging 8.2 PPG and 3.3 RPG and was named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team. Tokashiki's name will be on the list of WNBA international players that will skip out part of the season (Japanese National team).
Sydney Colson - San Antonio Stars (Re-signed)
Since being drafted, Sydney Colson has been bounced around the league for the past few years before landing in San Antonio. I thought it was good for the Stars to give her another shot considering the unknown injury to Danielle Robinson. They're going to need another guard to help fill the void if Robinson is out for the first couple of months.
