Vickie Johnson Named Head Coach of the San Antonio Stars

Vickie Johnson San Antonio Stars

San Antonio Express-News is reporting that Vickie Johnson will be the new head coach of the San Antonio Stars. Johnson is being promoted to head coach after serving as an assistant under Dan Hughes from 2011-2016. As a former WNBA player, Johnson was a 1st round (12th overall) selection to the New York Liberty and played 13 seasons in the league from 1997-2009.

My overall take on the Stars new coaching hire is, it makes sense considering it was presumed that general manager Ruth Riley would look to bring in someone who was already familiar with the roster. Building continuity with the team will serve as a much easier transition from Hughes to Johnson, while adding a new philosophy that current and future members can adapt to. Now with coach Johnson in place, she will look to improve a Stars team that finished 7-27 (12th in the WNBA) and failed to qualify for the playoffs in three of their last four seasons.

Update: Terms of the deal have been revealed to be a one year contract.
