WNBA's Top 20 List Revealed

Today marks the 20th year anniversary of the WNBA and when the first inaugural game tipped off between the Los Angeles Sparks and the New York Liberty. Today is also the day when the league announced their Top 20@20 most influential players to have ever played in the WNBA. The players who made the list are:

  • Seimone Augustus

  • Sue Bird

  • Swin Cash

  • Tamika Catchings

  • Cynthia Cooper-Dyke

  • Yolanda Griffith

  • Becky Hammon

  • Lauren Jackson

  • Lisa Leslie

  • Maya Moore

  • Deanna Nolan

  • Candace Parker

  • Ticha Penicheiro

  • Cappie Pondexter

  • Katie Smith

  • Sheryl Swoops

  • Diana Taurasi

  • Tina Thompson

  • Teresa Weatherspoon

  • Lindsey Whalen

A quick observation: This list is so good, I really have no complaints about it at all. I know there could have been other WNBA greats (past or present) added, but it's hard to argue with the likes of a Katie Smith, Tina Thompson. or a Teresa Weatherspoon. Apparently, 14 of the 15 players who made the top 15 (announced in 2011) are on the top 20 with the exception of Dawn Staley. Dawn Staley was replaced by Swin Cash, who I think deserves the recognition by making the list. The most surprising name to make the cut was former Detroit Shock star Deanna Nolan.

Nolan, who played 9 years in Detroit winning three championships, finals MVP, five time all-star, two time all-WNBA first team, and all-WNBA second team is very well deserving to be placed on the list. With 14 of the originals still on the list, names of the 6 new players added were Seimone Augustus. Swin Cash, Maya Moore, Deanna Nolan, Candace Parker, and Lindsey Whalen. It's understandable that there will be some fans and even sports writers who were apart of the voting committee to disagree with the overall selections, but as we all know you can please everyone regardless of who made Top 20@20 or not.
