Over the weekend of WNBA action, both the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty took a stance to show support for the victims of the recent tragedies that happened in Baton Rogue Louisiana, St. Paul Minnesota, and Dallas Texas. The victims were Alton Sterling and Philando Castile who were fatally shot by the police, then five officers were gunned down during a peaceful protest in Dallas. The NBA and the WNBA released a joint statement on the heartbreaking tragedies that unfolded:
The Minnesota Lynx were the first team to let their voices be heard by sporting black warm-up tee's with a message that says "Change Starts With Us, Justice and Accountability". On the back were the names of the two men who are deceased, a symbol of the Dallas PD star, and the words Black Lives Matter. Lynx went on the defeat the Dallas Wings 93-56.
The next following day, the Liberty joined in solidarity wearing black warm-up tee's with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter and #Dallas5. On the back featured a blank hashtag. Liberty went on the defeat the San Antonio Stars 75-65.
In addition to the warm-up tee's, the Liberty players talked about what it means for them to take a stand.
Of course this isn't the first time for players in the WNBA to speak on social issues. Just last month Shavonte Zellous of the New York Liberty spoke about her strong connection to the mass shooting that took place inside of an Orlando night club where 49 people were killed in the massacre. In sports history, influential figures such as the late Muhammad Ali who sadly passed away last month, spoke on these same social issues that effected the nation during his life time.
