The second half of the WNBA season is ready to tip-off on Friday August 26, which includes a total of 5 games on the schedule. I am going to give my brief predictions on the possible outcomes of each match-up.
First game up:
Sun vs Lynx at 7:00 PM ET
-The Lynx will come into the match-up winners of their last 6 games before the break.
-Yesterday the team announced the signing of guard Ana Cruz who recently earned a Silver with the Spain National team in the Olympics.
-The Sun are a young team looking to make a playoff push and they handed the Lynx their fourth loss in a thrilling 93-89 win in OT.
Prediction: I think the game will be close considering the Sun know how to play Minnesota, especially after the OT victory, but I have the Lynx winning to extend their streak to 7.
Liberty vs Stars at 8:00 PM ET
-The Liberty will welcome back guard Epiphanny Prince who missed the entire first half while recovering from an ACL injury.
-The Stars sadly have no chance of making the playoffs, but they still have a lot to play for which is pride and spoiling a team's playoff seeding.
Prediction: I don't have much to add to this game for the simple fact that I think it will be a blowout in favor of the NY Liberty. (My apologies to Marquez Anderson in advance).
Dream vs Sky at 8:30 PM ET
-Dream forward Sancho Lyttle was expected to miss 4 or 5 weeks with a foot injury into the Olympic break and as of now, her possible return for this match-up is doubtful.
-The Sky were the WNBA's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde team of the first half, we never knew which team would show up.
Prediction: There is a level of inconsistency for both teams, so I'll say which ever team decides to show up on Friday will win. I think that team will be the Dream.
Wings vs Mercury at 10:00 PM ET
-Wings forward Glory Johnson is set to return after suffering an injury to her big toe in her right foot.
-Along with losing Johnson, the Wings also lost 6 games straight before the break.
-However, the Mercury have gone 0-3 so far in the series of 4 games against the Wings.
Prediction: Where do i start? for starters I'm not sure about the Mercury as a team, but I do think Taurasi and Griner will be motivated to get off to a good start, especially after having an amazing run in Rio.. On the flip side, the Wings have had the Mercury's number this season. This is a tough one, but I think the Wings will sweep the season series.
Sparks vs Storm at 10:00 PM ET
-Question for the Storm is, will Sue Bird be ready to play? she did suffer a minor knee sprain vs Japan, but eventually returned in the Gold medal game vs Spain.
-I think Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd will look to get off to a hot start vs the Sparks.
--On the Sparks side, I think Ogwumike and Parker will put on a show at Key Arena.
Prediction: I don't imagine the Sparks having the same blowout as they did in their first game vs the Storm, but I do have the Sparks winning the game. I just don't think they have anyone who can guard Nneka, but if Nneka is kept in check then there is no one who can stop Parker. I think Stewart will have a double-double and Loyd will score 15 point, but that's about it.
