Penny Taylor

About three weeks ago our good friends at Swish Appeal reported that Phoenix Mercury forward Penny Taylor had stated her plans to retire.

And now this just in, the Phoenix Mercury organizations has made the news official via Doug Feinberg.

Penny Taylor has had a long list of accomplishments including 3 WNBA titles with the Phoenix Mercury, 3x All Star, All WNBA First-Team, and All WNBA Second-Team. In her home country of Australia, she was a 2x WNBL MVP, 3x WNBL All Star Five, and 2x WNBL Top Shooter Award. At the Olympic level she was named the FIBA World Championship MVP (2006) and won gold in the same year. She won a bronze medal twice twice in the world games and won two silver medals at the Olympic games.

As I have said once before, Diana Taurasi may be the star of the team, but it's Penny Taylor who is the engine that makes the Phoenix Mercury go. She was instrumental to the success of the Mercury and she will dearly be missed by all fans of the WNBA. While the league in it's 20th season has been fun to watch so far, it also has been somewhat depressing to know that Tamika Catchings, Swin Cash, Lauren Jackson (just retired), and now Penny Taylor will ride off into the sunset after the season concludes.
